Our Story

Born of Revolution.

The Cathedral stands on ground where the Battle of Trenton was fought. The Hessian commander Colonel Johann Gottlieb Rall was mortally wounded on this very site on December 27, 1776. From that ground, a Catholic parish has grown for 160 years.

1776

The Battle of Trenton — fought partly on this very ground. Colonel Johann Gottlieb Rall, commander of the Hessian forces, dies of his wounds here on December 27, 1776. A historical marker still stands on the Cathedral Rectory.

1865

Reverend Anthony Smith purchases the property. Plans for a Catholic church on the historic site begin.

1866

Ground broken for the foundation of Saint Mary's Church on April 23. Parishioners themselves contribute much of the labor over five years of construction.

1871

Saint Mary's Church is formally dedicated on January 1.

1881

The Diocese of Trenton is established on August 2 by Pope Leo XIII — and Saint Mary's becomes the Cathedral of the new diocese.

Today

160 years later, Saint Mary's continues as a thriving parish of over 1,000 families across English and Spanish-speaking communities.
